I was attending the Festival Filem Malaysia 21 at Putrajaya tonight. My documentary film, Making the Cut, which was produced with Finas funding got nominated for the Best Documentary category.
Ok, i got the ticket this morning and excited to go because my chance of winning is 1:5!
I got there at around 8:45pm and the show was about to start. I manage to seat at a good row and make sure that i was near to the stairs so if i win, i wouldn’t have to hassle myself through those Mak Datins with their tight Kebayas and nice cleavage.
Anyway, at around 9:02, i got this sms from the executive producer and ask me where i was. I told him where i was and he sms me back as fast as the flash from the newspaper photographers.
This was his sms: “urgent, Finas have just told us that only prod company ep(executive producer) and finas rep to go up if win”
Maybe it’s an Asian thing. When it comes to contracts and agreement, we usually don’t like to go through them or pay much heed to the formation of one. It would be rude if you ask too much questions and scrutinize the agreement in details. You are suppose to just accept them- no question asked. How many of us actually look carefully into our employment contracts before signing them? Some of us don’t even realize that our prospective employer had that deadly non-competitive clause in there, and signed happily on the dotted line because our expected salary was highlighted.

I’ve been wanting to write this for some time, and on this hot Saturday afternoon, after a few cooling laps in the pool, I finally decided to start work on it. I have met with many computer graphics friends who are freelancing full time and during our discussions, the common problems usually revolves around monetary issues, such as how to charge for a project in order to make a profit.
I hope this article will address some of those issues.
Freelancers, Who Are They?
In many ways, freelancers are not unlike entrepreneurs. They don’t report to anyone except to the client, so in essence, freelancers are very much running their own business, being their own bosses, and calling the shots. In Malaysia, freelancers can be on a full-time and part-time basis. Part-time freelancing are also commonly known as moon-lighting, since technically speaking, you are still employed and under someone’s payroll. Freelancing is a common practice in the computer graphics, art & design, photography, copywriting, computer programming and consultation-related industry.
‘Contaminated’, a production led by Quek Shio Chuan, together with team members Chin Ying Yih, Tan Jia Vern and Teoh Ching Hong tells a metaphorical story of the sufferings of Mother Nature in a fast paced music video. The song, which was composed by Quek Shio Chuan and Quek Shio Yee, was a fusion of classical instruments, contemporary hip-hop beats, with high-pitched soprano as well as modern rap.
ArtSentral: We would like to congratulate you on your win at the Astro Nextgen Contentpreneur Awards 2008. Tell us a little about your experience at the NCA, and the awards that you have won!
Quek Shio Chuan: The entire process from participating in the event to winning the awards had been an enjoyable and exciting one. Organizers of the event were very friendly and we would like to lend this opportunity to thank the staff of Astro, SKMM and MSC once again. ‘Contaminated’ won four awards which were Outstanding Music Video, Exceptional Lyrics, Finest Music and Arrangement, and Phenomenal Art Direction. Two other categories which we were nominated for were Most Amazing Special Effects and Creative Use of Medium.
I’m sure that most of you are aware of CG Overdrive 2008 which falls on 17th - 20th June, the promises of some awesome 4 days of learning and CG exposure in Singapore, so there is no need to talk about all that as you can get the info here.
But how much will it all cost? In this article, we will cover the conference and masterclass rates, as well as the group discounts available.
